I was born in Akron, Ohio. My parents were Harold and Margaret Humiston. My sister Nanci was seventeen months old. At age five, I started first grade at Lakemore Elementary School. I grew up close to Springfield Lake. My first job was as a paperboy for the Akron Beacon Journal at age twelve.

I began working at my uncle's appliance store when I was fourteen. I attended Springfield High School. I was a member of the Distributive Education Club of America during my senior year. It was a business course that allowed me to be in school for half a day and work part-time. My work performance was part of my grade. After graduation, I began working full-time for my uncle. I learned how to repair appliances and began in-home service at age eighteen.

I married Shirley Butler at the age of eighteen. We had three sons.
