Ministry Update

February 2021

Dear Friends and Supporters of Don Kistler Ministries and The Northampton Press:

Greetings and I hope this finds all of you safe and well during these troubled times. Let me encourage you that we as believers do not interpret God’s providence and provision by the newspaper, the internet, or cable news shows, but by God’s revealed Word. And, according to that, He is in total control over all the affairs of men.

FREE STUFF
On the donkistler.org website, on the pull down menu under “resources” there is a section of “Free Stuff.” There is a large file containing page after page of quotes from the Puritans and other Reformed writers. This was compiled by a good friend, Ricky Kortyna of Pittsburgh, PA., who has been reading good books for years and writing down quotes. This may be a good resource for you if you are a preacher, or just for your own personal edification.

PUBLISHING
Our latest book is “A Guide to Go to God,” on the Lord’s Prayer, by William Gouge, who is most famous for his massive commentary on the book of Hebrews, on which he preached for 33 years. His book on prayer has never been available for nearly 400 years. It is has been retyped and updated for modern readers. It is 384 pages, hardbound, stitch-sewn, and printed on acid free paper. Here is the link to order:

https://www.donkistler.org/store/p47/A_Guide_to_Go_to_God.html#/

Here is the proposed publishing schedule, as always depending on sales and the Lord providing the necessary funds. These are in no particular order:

  • “The Covenant of Works,” by John Colquhoun. This is the companion volume to his “Covenant of Grace,” which we recently published.
  • “The Abuse of Grace,” by Nicolas Claget. This is a work about antinomianism and the great sin of abusing the grace of God.
  • “Puritan Preachers: Joseph Alleine.” This is a compilation of sermons by this Puritan most noted for his famous work “An Alarm to Unconverted Sinners.” These sermons have been unavailable since the 1600’s, but will now be accessible to you in modern form.
  • “The Way of the Spirit in Bringing Souls to Christ,” by Thomas Allen. I was previously unfamiliar with this preacher, but was amazed at his depth and insights into the salvation process. He has another title I intend to publish, “The Glory of Christ.”
  • “The Saints’ Happiness,” by Jeremiah Burroughs. These are his 41 sermons on the Beatitudes. This was actually the first book I published in 1988 with Soli Deo Gloria, a reprint of the 1867 edition. This new edition has been completely retypeset, edited, and slightly modernized.
As you can see, I’ve been keeping busy during the pandemic!

SOON TO BE OUT OF PRINT
The following titles are close to selling out and will be out of print once they are.
  • "The Christian Father's Present to His Children" by John Angell James
  • "A Dialogue Between a Roman Catholic Priest and a Protestant" by Matthew Poole
  • "Sermons on Important Doctrines" by John Colquhoun

If you've considered these titles and have held off in the past, this would be a good time to get them. I see that when a book is out of print, the prices go sky high on ebay and other similar sites.

FINANCES
I looked back over my files since Northampton Press began in 2007. For the first 5 years I took no salary at all. Now, 14 years later, my hourly wage is the same as the teenager who hands you your order at a fast food restaurant.

When I set the price of a book we publish the only factor I take into account is the actual cost to produce that book, which is the printer’s charges, the freight cost to ship it to me, and the cost of the dustcover design. I do not factor in my time in editing or the proofreader’s charges. So I rely solely on book sales and donations for my support.

So, if you would like to contribute towards that meager amount it would be greatly appreciated. Frankly, if it weren’t for social security, I couldn’t make it financially. ‘Nuff said!

PREACHING

I recently went to northern California to celebrate my dad’s 93rd birthday. While there I preached at the church he attends when he’s able. Here is a link to that sermon:

 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W0eytFWpsYk&feature=youtu.be

The title of the sermon is “Glorification,” and the text is 1 John 3:1-4. I hope you find it edifying and encouraging.

I’ve been invited to preach at the graduation ceremonies of the SRL Seminary in Medellin, Colombia in November of this year. I was the first visiting professor to teach there almost 15 years ago.

May God and His Word continue to sustain you as we await His return!

Blessings,
Dr. Don Kistler

Michael Elliot
From 1998 - 2008, Michael Elliott's Movie Parables added a spiritual perspective to film reviews while bringing a worldwide attention and praise to his website, ChristianCritic.com . With Thus Saith Hollywood, Elliott revisits a popular feature of his website. Through the comparison of familiar movie quotes and timeless Bible verses, he was able to show just how often Hollywood's screenwriters "borrow" from the Creator of life. Because of his deep-seated belief that God's truths are woven into the very fabric of life, he further believes that any stories that deal with life or the human condition must, by definition, reflect God's original handiwork. This could arguably make God Hollywood's most prolific, uncredited screenwriter.

Being both a student and a teacher of the Bible, as well as having been both a professional actor and director, Michael Ondrasik, writing under the name Michael Elliott, sought to combine his two passions into a single outlet. In 1998, he launched ChristianCritic.com, a movie review website which brought spiritual insight to a secular form of entertainment. After a ten year stint of being a leading online voice for Christian film lovers, he retired his website. But the passion continued on. Michael Ondrasik lives in Central Florida with his wife Kate where they own and operate Home Video Studio. He still enjoys studying the Bible and watching movies.
